This featherweight contest of four two-minute rounds is a virtuouso display of technically skilled boxing, Julia is a protege of Sue Atkins, and black girl Sandra has a background in Judo.

Both women know their craft and both proved skilled at exploiting the weaknesses of the other. The decision of the judges was unanimous but it was by no means a one-sided fight and the loser was unlucky rather than outfought.

2. Y Mc Gorern vs L Tuppen (14:54 mins)

19 year-old Scots lass Yvonne has experience of kick-boxing but this is her first actual boxing match. Youthful - almost baby-faced - she more than holds her own against the bigger local girl, Louise. This was a hard match with punch traded unflinchingly for punch. Louise is a tall girl but she was never allowed to use her superior height to advantage. A close-fought match with a popular verdict.

3. P Philips vs C Robertson (19:10 mins)

This bout was an eliminator for the British Super Flyweight title, and these two contenders were as closely matched in ability as they were in weight! Petrina is also a champion kickboxer while Cheryl is the current British bantamweight champion, returning to the ring after having had a baby.

This fight was unusual in that the judges were unable to agree and the final verdict was given by the referee - an appropriate outcome for a very hard but very sporting scrap between two very able boxers.

4. A Philips vs K Peel (18:53 mins)

Another rousing fight between to very well-matched women. Ayesha comes to boxing from kick-boxing, and Karina from karate, but both have decided that this is where their future lies. And both girls fight as though it was this very match on which their futures depended!

Ayesha certainly looks the bigger woman but this didn,t prevent her being on the receiving end of quite a lot of punishment. She knows how to hand it out as well as take it though and gave local girl Karina (clearly a favourite with the crowd) as good as she got.

5. F Joseph vs I Shirley (25:31 mins)

At eight two-minute rounds this was the longest contest of the evening. Londoner Fosteres won the British Super-welterweight title in a close fought match with Julia in April 1995 and Julia was naturally looking forward to the opportunity for a rematch.
